Untitled
Oil on canvas
1500mm x 920mm
This painting is unique in the fact that in its entirety it shows every stage of the creation and technique of the artist. From the first layer of the background through to the last final highlights, encapsulating the life and sparkle in the contrasting turquoise blue eyes. As it is a quick snap of a photo. A selfie. Something that in our generation has become the norm.
The fact that she is right in the middle of the frame once again emphasises her eyes. The background is well lit, as well as the girl herself. The only part that is not well lit is her hair - this causes a contrast between the light eyes & her facial features and in turn, emphasises those features. Like many portraits, the background is simple to increase the attention on the subject in foreground. Unlike conventional portraits the artist has deliberately chosen the landscape format. This is in itself a deliberate juxtaposition and a reference to the subjects connection to the land. The facial expression, the moko and the colour scheme give a strong narrative in this image. It shows peacefulness in her eyes, assurance and strength.

Messages and Messengers
Oil on Canvas

Signs from the universe can be subtle, at first. They are the signs we all get, whether we ask for them or not. We can pick them apart or maybe forget them before they can become something more.
The language of the universe can at times be very simple. But it can also be extraordinary.

In the landscape of our everyday experiences, rain can reflect the myriad facets of human sentiment, perhaps even memories. Rain has long been a vivid symbol to express complex emotions. In this instance it is renewal and cleansing. “To me, this work looks at the fascinating interplay between nature and our being human.” The rain symbolises regeneration and growth, the full spectrum of life, and the heartaches and laughter that nourish us and make us who we are and what makes us want to reach for joy, despite everything.
The rain soothes, cleanses, and reveals, as if a blessing comes down to envelop the face, hinting at the mysteries and wonders that linger beneath our everyday lives.
There is a yearning in all of us to be loved deeply, and a constant search for balance - for love that, like rain, nurtures and soothes, amidst the uncertainties of life.

Not All That Glitters is Gold
Oil on Canvas

When I painted this, I was struggling personally. Doubt creeps in sometimes in the life of this artist. Can I do this? Is my work good enough? You have to think so, otherwise why do it at all. The doubt always creeps in. Slowly at first, until one day it smacks you in the face.
Sometimes it feels as though we are all just walking this earth ‘working for the man’ as the saying goes.
Everyone is in some way or another.
We are all in the same boat on the journey in the pursuit of happiness.
But not all that glitters is gold. Sometimes you realise that even little nuggets of Hokey Pokey can be worth more than any gold will ever be.
And so are we.
